In environmental analysis, the number of organic pollutants being detected is increasing. These range from well-known pesticides and persistent pollutants to an increasingly complex array of pharmaceuticals and metabolites. A new approach is needed in order to overcome these analytical challenges.
The National Laboratory Service (NLS) offers a comprehensive screening package that provides a cost-effective solution in the identification and detection of organic contaminants.

GC-MS based screening – Target based screening of environmental waters
GC-MS is a well established technique used for the full-scan screening of non-polar organic environmental pollutants.
The NLS already offers a GC-MS screening tool for the target based, multi-residue screening of volatile (VOCs) and semi-volatile compounds (SVOCs), utilising full-scan mass spectrometry. The method uses a retention time locked, custom built target MS database with > 1050 compounds, allowing for the identification and measurement of a wide range of organic pollutants in any given water body.

LC-MS based screening – New challenges, new approach
During the past decade mass spectrometry based on time-of-flight technology (TOF-MS) has shifted the focus of chemical analysis to polar water contaminants. Dramatic improvements in sensitivity and selectivity have made LC with high resolution MS (LC/MS Q-TOF) the method of choice.
The introduction of an LC-MS screen method to the NLS’s screening workflow has enabled the analysis of a broad range of polar organic pollutants.
