What are SPMDs?

  • SPMDs sequester primarily hydrophobic/lipophilic type substances. Substances with a log Kow> 4
  • Comprises a low density polythene tube with a pore size of typically < 10 Ȧ encasing the sequestering media, the neutral lipid Triolein
  • SPMDs sequester bio-available pollutant in a similar way to aquatic species. In some papers it has been described as a virtual fish
  • SPMDs appear frequently in published literature and is a widely accepted technique for the passive sampling of lipophilic substances in both water and air
